The Ray Gravell Memorial Shield is a hypothetical rugby union trophy played for by the 4 Welsh regions, Cardiff Blues, Dragons, Scarlets and Ospreys during League, Cup and European matches when playing each other. The idea came from a New Zealander (undercoverkiwi) on the Welsh Rugby forum, Gwlad! (http://nugwlad.freeforums.net). The trophy is named after Llanelli and Wales rugby legend Ray Gravell who sadly passed away on 31st October 2007. The concept is that it is a Title Holders Shield, similar to a Boxing World Title or the Ranfurly Shield in New Zealand. To retain the trophy, the holders must win or draw the next match against a fellow region.
It was decided that the “trophy” would be awarded in the first Llanelli Scarlets match after Ray’s passing. It was the Scarlets who won that opening game 17-12 against the Ospreys.
