Article Evaluation: Breast Ironing, Breast ironing
-Although it was mentioned towards the end of the article, the first point that jumped out to me was that this practice was not related to any religion,socio-economic status, or any other vital factor that usual influences violent practices. The article did not include that breast ironing was an act that suppresses a women's sexuality, or would that have been a biased statement?
-It did not stress or emphasize the fact that this practice is brutal violence against women.
-The article did not go in debt about the risks of breast ironing. It mentioned that the practice could cause breast cancer, or prevent a mother from breast feeding, but really no other consequences.
-There were citations at the end of almost every sentence; they appeared to be legitimate.
-The article could have included specific incidents that had more severe consequences. It sounds like this practice could result in fatality, but that was not mentioned.
-It mentioned that cases of breast "sweeping"has been reported in South Africa, but did not elaborate on the practice, causing it to sound like it is not relevant to this article.
-This article was apart of three wiki projects and were rated as start-class quality for each.
-The tone of the article was very straightforward and unbiased. Mothers were actually the main enforces of this ritual, claiming that it protects young girls from rape and sexual harassment. The people who support this practice feels that enlarged breasts is a sign that a girl is ready to become sexually active.
-It briefly discussed ways in which the practice is being resolved.
-There was a lot of helpful statistics in the article, putting in perspective how many girls have experienced breast ironing, what age group is usually targeted, and the locations where breast ironing is practiced.
-I just realized that in one part of the article it says that breast ironing is practiced in SOME parts of Cameroon, while it later mentions that it implemented in all TEN regions of Cameroon.
-This article about breast ironing could have elaborated a bit more, but it was nonetheless informative. I had never heard of this practice until this article and it did give me a vivid idea of how and why the practice was instituted.
