Introduction
[edit]The Canadian Football League (CFL) has had a rather broad catalog of mascots considering their smaller pool of teams in this professional sports league. The CFL has a total of nine teams, and each one has their own specific mascot, or more than one mascot. At the moment the CFL contains mascots like Ralph the Dog, Leo the Lion, Spike and Punter, Gainer the Gopher, Buzz and Boomer, T.C. and Stripes, Big Joe, Jason the Argonaut, and finally, Blitz and Touché.
Current Mascots
[edit]Ralph the Dog[1]
Ralph the Dog is the mascot for the Calgary Stampeders. He was introduced as the team's mascot in 1975. He has a backstory that he was born on Labor Day 1974, and was “acquired” by the team a year later in 1975.
Leo the Lion
Leo is the mascot for the BC Lions. There is no information to when Leo was first introduced by the team, however, the BC Lions were introduced in 1954.
Spike and Punter[2]
The Edmonton Elks have two mascots who represent their organization. The first is Spike who is the newest mascot of the franchise. Spike is an Elk. He was named as a mascot on the team in 2021 when Edmonton changed their name to the Elks. Punter is the second mascot of the duo. Punter is a large football. He was named as the team's mascot in 2004.
Gainer the Gopher[3]
Gainer the Gopher is the Saskatchewan Roughriders mascot. Gainer joined the Roughriders in 1977 and has been with the team ever since. More recently in 2006, Gainer was given a Roughriders jersey to wear during the games when he supports the team.
Buzz and Boomer[4]
Another mascot duo in the CFL is Buzz and Boomer. They are the Winnipeg Bluebombers mascots and have been a part of the team since 1984. Buzz and Boomer are two birds.
T.C. and Stripes[5]
In 2015 the Hamilton Tiger-Cats created a new mascot named Stripes who was a new and improved version of the mascot.
Big Joe
Big Joe was introduced to the league in 2014, when the Ottawa Redblacks were created, and a new Ottawa team was introduced to the CFL.
Jason the Argonaut[6]
Jason was introduced to the Toronto Argonauts in 2005. Jason is an Argonaut which is a Trojan Warrior from Greek mythology.
Blitz and Touché[7]
The final duo of CFL mascots is Blitz and Touché, which are the second duo of bird mascots. They are the mascots for the Montreal Alouettes. Touché was introduced in 1996, and three years later in 1999 Blitz who is Touches' younger brother made his introduction to the league.
