The International Association of Labour Law Journals promotes the international study and exchange of labour law publications. It consists of twenty-one journals published in countries across the world.[1]

Purpose[edit]

The Association seeks to fulfill three principal goals: (1) Further academic achievement in the areas of labour and employment law; (2) Foster sharing of information relevant to the publishing process; and (3) Create greater connections between the editors of national and international labour and employment law journals.[1]

Marco Biagi Award[edit]

The late Italian jurist Marco Biagi was instrumental in forming the Association, originally called the Club of Labour Law Journals, and served as its first president.[1] Biagi was assassinated in 2002 by the Red Brigades-PCC.[2] In his honor, the Association Awards the Marco Biagi Award each year for the best paper on comparative or international labour law by a young scholar.[1]

History[edit]

The late Italian jurist Marco Biagi was instrumental in forming the Club of Labour Law Journals and served as its first president.[1] During the tenure of Biagi's successor, Canadian labour lawyer Jeffrey Sack, QC,[3] the Club was reconstituted as an association and membership expanded from twelve to twenty-one journals.[4] Following Sack, Professor Gian Guido Balandi of the University of Ferrara served as president. The current president is Professor Steven L. Willborn of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Law.[1]

The Association presents the Marco Biagi Award annually for the best paper on comparative or international labour law by a young scholar. The past winners are Orsola Razzolini (2009, Bocconi University, Italy),[5] Virginie Yanpelda (2010, University of Douala, Cameroon),[6] Beryl ter Haar (2011, Leiden University, The Netherlands),[7] Attila Kun (2011, Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church, Hungary), Manuel Antonio Garcia-Muñoz Alhambra (2011, University of Castile-La Mancha, Spain),[8] Ledesma Iturbide (2012), and Diego Marcelo (2012).

The Association conducts an annual meeting hosted by a member journal. Past meetings have been held in the following locales: Modena, Italy (2000 and 2004); Brussels, Belgium (2001); Philadelphia, U.S. (2002); Madrid, Spain (2003); Toronto, Canada (2005); Paris, France (2006); Bologna, Italy (2007); Warwick, England (2008); Sydney, Australia (2009);[9] Herstmonceux, England (2010); and Seville, Spain (2011).[1] The 2012 annual meeting will be held July 2–5 in Philadelphia.[10][11]
