Saint-Grégoire-le-Grand is a former municipality of Quebec. On December 21, 1994, it was replaced by the municipality of Mont-Saint-Grégoire, which unified the municipality of Saint-Grégoire-le-Grand and the town of Mont-Saint-Grégoire[1]. The municipality was named after Pope Gregory I, who was the pope during the turn of the 7th century.

  • Brother André Bessette, the founder of Saint Joseph's Oratory in Montréal, was born and baptized in Saint-Grégoire-le-Grand in 1845. Brother André died in 1937, was beatified on May 24, 1982, and was canonized on Octover 17, 2010. In 1945, a monument was erected in his honour, located outside the urban area at the crossroads of 3e Rang N and Rang du Grand Bois, the street where he was born. The monument consists of a Stanstead granite cross which is 19 feet tall (5.7 m) and weighs 190 tonnes.
