The Student Recreation Center provides great opportunities for students who enjoys exercising, sports, or an athletic training major.

History[edit]

The department of Campus Recreation began from McCormick Hall in the 1960s. It provided recreation opportunities for the students of Illinois State University. The recreation center soon moved to 220 North Main Street in Normal, which later served as the Outdoor Adventure Center.[1]

The Student Recreation Building opened on March 14, 1988, after many renovations. The new building has space provided for cardiac and weight training, racquetball, sports courts, and group fitness programming. The building was also home for Recreation Services until it was closed on December 15, 2010.[2]

In May 2006, Illinois State University Board of Trustees approved $2.2M in funding to enable Illinois State to establish the new Student Fitness center and McCormick Hall. The budget was put into appointing architectural and engineering consultants, conduct feasibility studies, and initiate and design process. The construction of the Student Fitness Center and McCormick Hall cost $43.9 million on October 26, 2007, but by July 2008 the cost increased to $49.6 million. In 2008, Dunn-Barton residence halls destroyed to make way for the Student Fitness Center and McCormick Hall.[3]

The new building has basketball courts, cardiac/strength training areas, an indoor track, group fitness spaces, a pool and a climbing wall. The center also has classrooms, laboratories, and office space for the School of Kinesiology and Recreation. The center was estimated to take 20 months to build beginning in fall of 2008. In fall 2010, the project was finally completed and officially opened on January 10.[4]

McCormick Hall History[edit]

The hall was named after Henry McCormick and was opened in 1925[5]. McCormick came to Illinois State in 1869 and became Vice President in 1892 until his retirement in 1922[6]. McCormick Hall was first built as a gymnasium, but by 1958 as the population of students rises the University decided to have McCormick Hall remodeled in 1961[7].

Sport Club[edit]

The Student Recreation Center offers variety of sport clubs that includes men and women's badminton, baseball, men and women's basketball, fencing, fishing, golf, ice hockey, paintball, quidditch, tennis, wrestling, and many more[8].

Student Fitness Center[edit]

There are lots of opportunities in the Student Fitness Center and McCormick Hall for Illinois State student and the community for years to come. The recreation center is home to the Health Promotion and Wellness, and the School of Kinesiology and Recreation[9].
