Background

[edit]

A very involved edit war erupted at Talk:Right to bear arms. This was an interesting case because all of the principal contributors seemed quite well-informed and conversant with a good range of referenced sources.

Because the dispute showed no signs of abating, User:Jossi intervened with a stern admonition indicating potential blocks and page protection. Although not originally involved with this article or the dispute, User:Dreftymac jumped in with an unsolicited "Comment from an outsider" as a first-step toward a potential resolution.

To further assist in resolving the dispute, which had escalated to a formal RfC, User:Dreftymac made direct edits to the article by improving the references and substantiation for the critical sticking-points that were fueling the dispute. Both "sides" in the edit war agreed that the edits were an improvement, and the edit war ended.

This was a very favorable outcome, because it was satisfactory to opposite "sides" in a detailed edit war, and it obviated the need to block contributors and protect the page.
