Věra Hendrychová (1. Februar 1920 Prague1981 Prague) was one of the most famous Czechoslovak naive art painters.

Life and career

[edit]

Věra Hendrychová graduated from grammar school in Prague. At the age of twenty, she married František Hendrych, co-owner of a laboratory instrument factory. The marriage did not last, however, and the couple divorced in the mid-1960s. She worked as a clerk until 1957. Then, as the ex-wife of a factory owner, she was forced by the communist regime to leave her job. In the late 1960s she developed schizophrenia, which partly influenced her work. Later she worked as a worker at a press. She began painting consistently in the early 1970s after retiring on disability. She died in Prague in 1981.

Věra Hendrychová's work can be divided into two main thematic areas. The first are commemorative paintings depicting rural life, nature and the theme of balls and balls. Her paintings of carnivals and Slavic carnivals are particularly well known in this area. The paintings are often shrouded in mysticism, fantasy and myths, featuring carol singers, clowns, musicians, carnival masks and flowers, accentuated by a colourful combination of colours. The second area is the exotic landscapes that have never been explored, especially those around the Mediterranean.

Věra Hendrychová exhibited together with leading Czechoslovak naive painters (e.g. Josef Hlinomaz) both in Czechoslovakia and at international exhibitions in Germany, Austria, Spain, Switzerland, Great Britain, Italy and the USA.
