Early Life and Education
[edit]Nâzım Hikmet was born on January 15, 1902, in Thessaloniki, which was then part of the Ottoman Empire. His mother was Celile Hanım and his father was Hikmet Bey. He attended the Galatasaray High School and later the Turkish Naval High School, but he left due to health problems. Hikmet continued his education in Moscow at the Communist University of the Toilers of the East.
Career
[edit]Nâzım Hikmet began writing poetry in his teenage years and gained fame for his free verse and socially committed poetry. He is considered one of the most important figures in Turkish literature. His works often addressed political and social issues, leading to his imprisonment in Turkey for his political beliefs. He spent many years in prison and later went into exile in the Soviet Union.
Personal Life
[edit]Nâzım Hikmet was married to Münevver Andaç and had a son named Mehmet. He gained Polish citizenship in 1951. He passed away on June 3, 1963, in Moscow due to a heart attack and was buried in the Novodevichy Cemetery.
Legacy
[edit]Nâzım Hikmet's poetry has been translated into many languages and he is celebrated as a major figure in world literature. His works continue to be read and studied for their artistic and historical significance.
