Yost and Remington

[edit]
George W. N. Yost

George W. N. Yost was an original promoter of the first commercially successful typewriter, the Sholes and Glidden. Although primarily invented by Christopher Latham Sholes, the machine gradually came to be acquired largely by Yost and James Densmore, who established the firm Densmore & Yost to market the device. In 1873, E. Remington and Sons, an arms manufacturer, contracted to manufacturer the typewriter and, after a period of mechanical refinements, began to market the machine in July 1874.[2] At the prompting of Yost, a new entity of Densmore, Yost & Company was established to manage the typewriter’s patents and finances.[3] Through the next several years, Yost undertook to work with Remington to develop the device further, believing that a machine superior to the Sholes and Glidden could be devised.

In early 1877, Yost purchased several designs and enlisted William K. Jenne, a Remington manager who had adapted the Sholes and Glidden, to undertake development of a machine which could write in both upper- and lowercase letters.
