Nuri Aydın (b. 1977, Istanbul) is a Turkish Orthopaedics and Traumatology Specialist and Founding Rector of Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa. He is the professor of Medicine, Orthopaedics and Traumatology at the Cerrahpasa School of medicine and elected Founding Chairman of the Board of Trustees of İstanbul University-Cerrahpaşa.[1]

Education[edit]

Prof. Dr. Nuri Aydın graduated from Istanbul University, Cerrahpaşa School of Medicine, in 2001. During his studies, he participated in distinct language courses in London, United Kingdom, and attended training programs at Yale University and the University of Pittsburgh in the United States.[2] Furthermore, he trained at the Hospital for Special Surgery New York (USA) in trauma and foot surgery and Klinikum Rechts Der Isar Hospital of Technical University Munich (Germany) for sports injuries.[3][4] Dr. Aydın completed his internship at Harvard University and residency at Marmara University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology. Soon after the residency, Prof. Dr. Aydın completed his compulsory service at Validebağ Teachers' State Hospital (now Üsküdar State Hospital). Later in 2006, he became board certified Orthopedics and Traumatology surgeon. He also served at Acıbadem Private Hospital, Istanbul.

He completed his military service in Erzurum Mareşal Çakmak Military Hospital as an Orthopedics and Traumatology specialist.

In 2012, during his stay at Üsküdar State Hospital, he attained the rank of Associate Professor. In 2013, he was appointed as a faculty member at Cerrahpaşa School of Medicine. He gained the title of professor in 2017 and continues to serve in the same institute. He is among the few people who become Full Professors at the age of 40.

International Professional Activities[edit]

Prof. Dr. Nuri Aydın was accepted as a "full member" of the European Society for Surgery of the Shoulder and the Elbow in 2006. He obtained training on shoulder surgery at eight different centres in Europe, including Charité (Germany), Annecy (France), Hatanpää and Coxa (Finland), Linkopig (Sweden), Berne (Switzerland), Nice (France), Innsbruck (Austria) and Aarhus (Denmark) [5]. In 2013, he was awarded the European Society for Surgery of the Shoulder and the Elbow (SECEC) "Intra-European Traveling Fellowship" with Dr. R. Barco Laakso from Spain.[5]

In 2016, he received the "AAOS International Surgical Skills Scholarship'' from the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) [6]. As part of this scholarship, he made several clinical and surgical observations at Stetson Powel Orthopedics Los Angeles (USA). In 2020, he was awarded the "Emerging Leaders Scholarship'' by the same academy.[6][7][8]

Dr. Aydın served as the chair of the Shoulder Surgery Committee of the International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology (SICOT), a member of the Turkish Society of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Board of Directors, and a member of the Eastern European Support Committee of the European Society for Surgery of the Shoulder and the Elbow (SECEC).[9]

He currently serves as a Member of the Shoulder Surgery Committee of the International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology (SICOT).[10]

Prof. Dr. Aydın participates in the annual Course of the Shoulder Surgery (Austria) at the University of Innsbruck, one of the prominent shoulder surgery training centres in Europe, as an "Honored Lecturer" and gives lectures and hands-on training on shoulder arthroscopy and shoulder prosthesis applications to his European colleagues.[11]

Professional Interest[edit]

Prof. Dr. Nuri Aydın's primary focus is on prosthetic reconstruction, recurrent shoulder dislocations, knee and shoulder ligament injuries, and muscle tears surgeries, directing his publications in high-ranking peer-reviewed journals. He wrote 9 books and chapters on said discipline. In addition, he has 60 referred abstracts and oral presentations at national and international conferences. He also attended several international conferences as an invited speaker.

Prof. Dr. Aydın consistently received research grants from various funding bodies, including higher education commission (YOK) funded projects. He served as a reviewer for many top journals of their disciplines.

Administrative Duties[edit]

Between 2014-2018, Prof. Dr. Nuri Aydın held several prominent administrative positions. He served as a member of the Blood Transfusion Committee of Cerrahpaşa School of Medicine Hospital and the Special Student Commission of Istanbul University Rectorate. He also served as Deputy Physician-in-Chief and director of the Revenue Department of Cerrahpaşa School of Medicine Hospital. He currently serves as a member and the Vice-Chair of the Board of Association of University Hospitals Union, Turkiye.[12]

Establishment of Foundation for the Development of İstanbul University-Cerrahpaşa[edit]

In order to support Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa, established by the split of Istanbul University, the Foundation for the Development of Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa was established under the Official Gazette noticed 03/10/2020, no. 31263 by a group of academicians directed by Rector Prof. Dr. Nuri Aydın. The aim of the foundation was "to ensure unity, solidarity, and cooperation among employees in the field of education, health, research and development, sports, social activities, culture and arts in public and private sectors across Turkiye, especially in the Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa (IUC), and to acknowledge other objectives written on the deed of foundation".[15]

Prof. Dr. Nuri Aydın continues to serve as the Founding Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa.[16][17][18]

Establishment of Cerrahpaşa International Amid COVID-19 Pandemic[edit]

Under Rector Prof. Dr. Nuri Aydın's leadership, "Cerrahpaşa International" was founded to provide world-class medical tourism and health care services for international patients. It was registered by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office on 22 April 2020 and owned by Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa Rectorate [18]. The press launch of Cerrahpaşa International, with the slogan "World is healthier with us,” was held at Cerrahpaşa School of Medicine on 18 June 2020.[19][20]

It is the first international health program owned by a public university in Turkiye. The "Cerrahpaşa Online Doctor" service was launched as an innovative application under the "Cerrahpaşa International" program that helped patients across the globe due to the imposition of travel restrictions in the COVID-19 pandemic.[21] Rector Prof. Dr. Nuri Aydın conducted the first online patient consultation with an Azerbaijani patient. Prof. Dr. Aydın had already performed knee replacement surgery at Cerrahpaşa School of Medicine for this patient.[22][23] This online consultation was the first remote patient consultation conducted by a public health institution in Turkiye. The Online Doctor service and the Cerrahpaşa’s success during the COVID-19 pandemic was featured in international visual media such as TRT World[24][25], BBC [26], CNN International[27][28], France 24[29], France 24 (Arabia)[30], France 24 (French)[31], Japanese FUJI TV[32], Azertac[33], Almaty TV[34]. A documentary prepared by the BBC, "The Coronavirus in Turkey: A Day at Cerrahpaşa,” received extensive coverage worldwide[35].


Later these publications, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had an online meeting with Rector Prof. Dr. Nuri Aydın, his team, and COVID-19 patients receiving treatment at Cerrahpaşa School of Medicine and acknowledged Cerrahpaşa for achieving international success in the COVID-19 course.[36][37][38][39]

Private Life[edit]

Prof. Dr. Nuri Aydın is fluent in English, married with three children.
