Loading images and pictures is difficult because of all the red tape. Here are some notes and instructions. Andrewđ(talk) 12:33, 18 December 2021 (UTC)
Worked example
[edit]Marion Conacher was a missionary nurse. We just seem to have one picture in the obituary in The Scotsman. As this was taken after she moved to India in 1963, it's probably still in copyright. But it is feasible to load such pictures of deceased people as a fair use. Here's step-by-step details of how this was done:
1. The picture was downloaded to a local PC. This was done by viewing it in a browser, then using a right-click to get a menu option to save the picture.
2. The picture was then edited to auto-correct the brightness and contrast and then to crop the picture to the essential details. In this case, this was the subject and an evocative tiger. This is not essential but cropping helps with the claim of fair use. Google Photos was used to edit the picture in this case.
3. The photo file was then uploaded to Wikipedia using the Upload file option which appears in the leftmost menu under Tools. The Wizard provides many options and the option chosen in this case was Plain form for local uploads. This is much simpler than the full Wizard.
4. The options chosen in the form were:
- a) The name of the local sourcefile containing the edited photo
- b) The name to be given to the file on Wikipedia : "Marion Conacher.jpg"
- c) A summary describing the picture. This was done using a fair-use-rationale form (FUR)
{{Non-free use rationale | Article = Marion Conacher | Description = Marion Conacher with Kairi the tiger | Source = [https://www.scotsman.com/news/people/obituaries-marion-conacher-mbe-missionary-nurse-who-survived-jealous-poisoner-3429108 The Scotsman] | Portion = Cropped | Low resolution = Yes | Purpose = It is only being used to illustrate the article in question | Replaceability = As the subject is deceased, no free equivalent could reasonably be obtained or created to replace this media | Other information = *The use of this image on Wikipedia is contended to be a fair use, since it is used solely for educational purposes in a not-for-profit encyclopedia, is necessary for cultural and historical purposes, and the material value of the possible copyright is not believed to be lessened by its use here *It is believed that the use of this image on the English-language Wikipedia to illustrate an article on the person in question falls under the "Non-profit educational" clause of the Fair Use doctrine currently upheld by United States law. ([http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/html/uscode17/usc_sec_17_00000107----000-.html 17 U.S.C. § 107]) *It is a low resolution copy *It is only being used to illustrate the article in question *The image is irreplaceable; a free analogue is impossible to produce as the original will be covered by copyright for the foreseeable future *Owing to the limited web-resolution of the image, only a small portion of a copyrighted work is used *It does not limit the copyright owner's rights to sell the image in any way *For the same reasons, the portion of the copyrighted work used is of inherently lower quality than the original, reducing the risk of competitiveness and therefore the effects of this copy on the market for or value of versions held by the owner of the copyright }}
- d) Licensing. This is selected from a long drop-down list. In this case, the appropriate choice was "Deceased person"
- Having entered these four items into the form, the upload button was pressed to complete the upload.
5. This then created the file on the English Wikipedia. Note that this is the right place for such fair-use images, as Commons will not accept them.
6. The name of the image file was then added to the article's infobox using the image and caption parameters.
{{Infobox person | name = Marion Conacher | image = Marion Conacher.jpg | caption = with Kairi the tiger | honorific_suffix = MBE | birth_date = 2 July 1933 | birth_place = Edinburgh | death_date = 8 October 2021 | alma_mater = Princess Royal Maternity Hospital | occupation = Missionary nurse | known_for = Community nursing in India }}
