An Escher Pizza, Pizza di Esch, or Pizza Eschoise.

The Escher Pizza (also known as Pizza Eschoise, rarely called Pizza Esch or Pizza Di Esch) is a kind of pizza that was introduced by the city of Esch-sur-Alzette in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, together with local pizzerias in 2022, when Esch-sur-Alzette was the European Capital of Culture. One argument for its creation was that this variant of pizza had often been ordered in pizzerias in and around Esch-sur-Alzette. Until then, however, this pizza had no official name.

Ingredients

In addition to the traditional pizza base of cheese and tomato sauce, this pizza is topped with spicy salami, garlic and anchovies. Apart from the garlic, which is indigenous to the southern region of Luxembourg, these are all ingredients that come from countries that have played a role in the history of immigration to Esch-sur-Alzette. The pizza itself originated in Italy. Spicy salami is a speciality of many southern regions, including Spain and the south of France. The same is true of anchovies, which are very popular in Portugal in particular.

Since the industrialisation of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, the southern region of the country has experienced several waves of immigration from these regions. These ingredients are therefore intended to represent the diversity and versatility of the inhabitants of Esch-sur-Alzette.

Spread

The Escher Pizza was initially sold in about fifteen pizzerias in the centre of Esch-sur-Alzette. Since then, other pizzerias, also in other countrys, have included this pizza in their menu.
