25.07.1959 | Commissioned Second Lieutenant not long after 20th birthday.
After attending Platoon Commanders’ Course, joined 1 KINGS in Muthaiga Camp, 3 miles from Nairobi city, taking command of 11 Platoon in D Company under Brian Tuck. Made firm friends with John Andrews who would later be his Best Man and share his last career posting. 3 months he later participated in a major expedition to climb Mount Kilimanjaro using only standard military equipment; his specific task being to establish Base Camp at 9,000 feet. The expedition was followed by a Platoon deployment into the Belgium Congo to assist with the evacuation of Europeans as the country descended into Civil War. |
early 1961 | Short attachment to the Sultan’s Armed Forces in Muscat, patrolling the desert to assisting Kuwait’s security forces with protecting strategic reserves. 1 KINGS was deployed by air from Kenya to Kuwait such was the seriousness of the situation. As the threat receded 1 KINGS returned to Kenya and then back to the UK. Michael was then sent to the Depot at Preston to train recruits and Junior Soldiers. |
08.1962 | Michael married Catherine Mary Hunter in Stock, Essex. |
1964 | Rejoined 1 KINGS in Ballykinler but was then appointed as Aide-de-Camp to Major General Tony Prince, Head of the South East Asia Treaty Organisation Planning Team in Bangkok. |
1966 | In the summer the Carringtons returned to 1 KINGS as he was appointed to command the Reece Platoon, in B Company, considered to the best post in the Battalion. Once again he was under the command of Brian Tuck. |
1967 | Settled down to work towards the Staff Promotion Exams and was sent at the Youth Liaison Officer to Manchester, tasked with giving Army career talks to schoolboys. |
1970 | In Spring Michael was appointed to a Junior Staff post in Singapore.
They returned to England in time for 1 KINGS second operational deployment to Northern Ireland. |
1972 | During 4 months in the summer of 1972 the Battalion suffered almost 60 casualties in engagements with Republican terrorists in West Belfast.
They then moved to Camberley while Michael attended Staff College. He returned to 1 KINGS in Hong Kong for the second year of the Battalion’s tour in Stanley Fort and their third tour in the Far East, commanding a Company under Colonel Tony Davis. |
1974 | At the end of 1974 the Battalion moved to Londonderry for an 18 month operational resident tour. |
1976 | This extremely demanding tour in a violently Republican area of Northern Ireland came to an end for Michael in early 1976 when he moved to a Staff appointment in York. This was cut short the following year as the new Commanding Officer, Colin Denning, wanted Michael as his Second-in-Command in Colchester and deployments followed in 1977 and 1979. |
1977 | The first deployment was to Cyprus. Michael was promoted to Local Lieutenant Colonel with a task of securing the Eastern Sovereign Base Area and protecting the strategically important intelligence gathering units based there.
At the end of the 6 months 1 KINGS returned to Colchester and a major Parade for the presentation of new Colours by Queen Elizabeth. Michael found it a challenge to step down from the command he had in Cyprus and was posted away from 1 KINGS to serve with the British Army of the Rhine in Germany. After 2 years he was posted to the Ministry of Defence. |
1983 | Michael was selected for promotion to Lieutenant Colonel. His last tour in the Army was his fourth tour in the Far East as he was appointed Commandant of the Hong Kong Military Service Corps, with John Andrews as his British Adjutant. |
1985 | Became Chairman of the international Board of Directors of Drummonds Bank
Director, Berisford International and handled the acquisition of British Sugar, owner of the Silver Spoon brand, and diversified into property and financial services. Maria Nobrega Foundation, Brazil |
1987 | He retired from the Army when he handed over command in Hong Kong in 1987. |
2003 | The Maria Nobrega Foundation was established as a charitable trust with the charities commission.
In Romania, the Foundation focused on building restoration in the heart of Archita, a small rural village, which has been an important start in stimulating new economic activity. MNF assisted in the gathering of world heritage experts in Cyrene, Libya in 2008. Including representatives from UNESCO and ICCROM, the event was headlined by the signing of the Cyrene Declaration by Libyan authorities committing to protect the vast coastal Mediterranean Green Mountain areas. |
2010 | The International Traditional Knowledge Institute was formally established with a vote in Florence.
ITKI launched the project “Creating an American Oasis (Tucson, USA)” presented in Paris at the UNESCO Conference to promote the new Convention on the landscape. |
2018 | Michael was Knighted with the Order of St. Hubertus with further honours bestowed posthumously at the International Order of St. Hubertus Investiture of Knights at Blenheim Palace in September 2018. |
