North Caucasian Volkodav (Кавкаски Волкодав) = Caucasian wolfcrusher is a livestock guardian dog originated in North Caucasus. This breed has not yet been officially recognized by international dog kennel Clubs or by FCI ,these animals are gaining more and more popularity every year.
Caucasian wolfcrusher are actively bred in Karachay-Cherkessia, Dagestan, North Ossetia, Dagestan and other republics of the North Caucasus, as well as in Rostov, Krasnodar and Stavropol Territories, in the republics of Transcaucasia. These dogs came to the Caucasus along with nomads and merchants thousands of years ago . This dog were highly valued for their excellent guard, fighting and hunting talents againstwild animals .The breed has evolved over time without much human input. Caucasian Volkodav are actively bred in Karachay-Cherkessia, Dagestan, North Ossetia, and other republics of the North Caucasus, as well as in Rostov, Krasnodar and Stavropol Territories, in the republics of Transcaucasia. These dogs came to the Caucasus along with nomads and merchants thousands of years ago , the dog were highly valued for their excellent guard, fighting and hunting talents against wild animals. The breed has evolved over time without much human intervention. The dogs were kept freely, the strongest survived.
The name "Volkodav" comes from the word "Crush"and Volko = wolf the name clearly characterizes these dogs. The Caucasian Volkodav is a strong and ferocious animal, it can fight with a lynx and a wild boar. The tradition of docking ears and tail is quite old. Shepherds believed that open cropped ears allow the dog to hear better and heal fast in case of injuries , and a short tail makes the dog's sleep more sensitive and makes it possible to detect enemies in a timely manner.
In the North Caucasus, there were short-haired and long-haired varieties of mountain shepherd dogs. Short-haired animals were more hardy, were not afraid of heat and long transitions, and had greater vitality. The long-haired variety was less mobile and hardy, with a strong and powerful constitution.
Subsequently, long-haired dogs began to be used to protect homes and property in villages and auls, and later, on the basis of these long-haired dogs, the Caucasian Shepherd Dog breed was created in URSS red star kennel, which began to specialize in protecting objects, having lost the skills of protecting sheep and fighting predators. The Caucasian Volkodav is a short-haired variety of shepherd dogs, he retained all the working qualities of his ancestors. Previously, dog test between Caucasian Volkodav were regularly held, which attracted thousands of spectators. In the 1960s, a decree was issued on the shooting of unnecessary dogs in sheepfolds, then most of the livestock of Caucasian Volkodav was barbarously destroyed. Over the past 20 years, breeding work with the Caucasian Volkodav has acquired a civilized character. There are families and lines in the breed, selection work is carried out under the continuous supervision of cynologists.
History
The development of the breed was jeopardized due to the taboo imposed on the sale and purchase of Caucasian Volkodav in Central Asia and the Caucasus, and the degeneration of the breed began. The situation was corrected by the incredible efforts of Islam Dotdaev, who traveled all over the Caucasus and Central Asia, urging Volkodav dog owners to lift the taboo. Dotdaev's efforts were crowned with success, at present Volkodav puppies are being sold, dog owners agree among themselves on matings in different regions. The Caucasian Volkodav is a large and strong animal. The breed standard has not yet been approved. Specialists - breeders evaluate Volkodav in aggregate by working qualities and exterior, without focusing on any one of the signs, such as size, color, exterior details.

The Caucasian Volkodav has a relatively short and thick coat, the color can be different. Ears and tail are usually docked. The head is powerful, with strong jaws, the muzzle is rather short.
