Akpa-Edem, situated in the Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State, Nigeria, spans an area of 30 sq-km with an estimated population of 25,000 residents according to the 2006 census. It shares borders with Ozi-Edem to the south, Edem-Ani to the east, Ibagwa Ani to the north, and Nrobo to the west. Notable towns along Edem borders include Okpuje near Owa and Agu-Amagu, Abbi near Agu-Amagu Abbi, and Ugwuoke Ugwuinyi near Agu-Amagu. Akpa-Edem is renowned for its Omabe festivals.

The community comprises 11 independent villages, each governed by an Oha Council led by an Onyishi in accordance with their cultural traditions. The traditional and political structure of Akpa-Edem revolves around the Oha Akpa, the Ruling Council of Elders, headed by Igwe Akpa-Edem as the traditional ruler and symbol of unity. Onyishi Akpa-Edem, Onyishi Edem, Ossai Edem, Ndi Ishi, Dimanyis Asogwas, Idujas, and Ogbanabo form integral parts of this structure.

Economically, Akpa-Edem thrives on agriculture, engaging in shifting cultivation and crop rotation. Cash crops include kolanuts, oil beans, breadfruit, and various beans, while a diverse array of fruits and vegetables is cultivated. The community also participates in small-scale stone production for construction due to the rocky terrain.

Tourism in Akpa-Edem boasts natural features like the Akatakata Waterfalls, Okpu cave and stream, and the Ehere Stream and Odorongwume Lakes in Agu-Amagu. Year-round hunting is a major attraction in the extensive forests housing various wildlife.

The community celebrates diverse festivals throughout the year, such as Onunu Akpa-Edem, the Omabe Festival in three stages, Egba Chukwu, and Ofala/Iri Ji Igwe Akpa-Edem. Akpa-Edem is known for its long-living inhabitants, often surpassing 100 years. While Christianity, predominantly Catholicism, has a strong presence, ancient ancestral worship practices persist.

Distinct titles, including Ozor and Lolo-Anyi for noble men and women, and the Ogbu-na-Agodo title cadre, contribute to Akpa-Edem's rich cultural heritage. Additionally, the community bestows chieftaincy titles upon outstanding individuals.
