Evaluate an article[edit]

This is where you will complete your article evaluation. Please use the template below to evaluate your selected article.

  • Bechdel test: Bechdel test
  • I chose this topic because it is an interesting topic that I have found myself paying attention to in the media.

Lead[edit]

Guiding questions
  • Does the Lead include an introductory sentence that concisely and clearly describes the article's topic?
    • Yes, but I wish it was included that it is an approach that aims to evaluate the portrayal of women, instead of just a "measure of representation of women."
  • Does the Lead include a brief description of the article's major sections?
    • Yes
  • Does the Lead include information that is not present in the article?
    • Yes
  • Is the Lead concise or is it overly detailed?
    • I believe the lead is concise.

Lead evaluation[edit]

Content[edit]

Guiding questions
  • Is the article's content relevant to the topic?
    • Yes
  • Is the content up-to-date?
    • Statistics shown are from 2016, more recent research from the last 3 years could be included.
  • Is there content that is missing or content that does not belong?
    • The graphic about female and male characters in film could absolutely be displayed in a different fashion, and also be updated (the graphic only goes up to 2015). I would also like to see more examples of limitations of the test, and an explanation as to why it is not defined.

Content evaluation[edit]

Tone and Balance[edit]

Guiding questions
  • Is the article neutral?
    • Yes
  • Are there any claims that appear heavily biased toward a particular position?
    • No, the article shows limitations on the test, criticism, and tests derived from this one - the article is unbiased.
  • Are there viewpoints that are overrepresented, or underrepresented?
    • Conservative viewpoints are underrepresented - the one time conservative points are brought up, it is explained that it received a great amount of criticism.
  • Does the article attempt to persuade the reader in favor of one position or away from another?
    • The article is unbiased, however, since conservative viewpoints are barely brought up, it may be difficult for people with those viewpoints to feel represented. The article, if anything, persuades readers to become more aware of representation of women in media.

Tone and balance evaluation[edit]

Sources and References[edit]

Guiding questions
  • Are all facts in the article backed up by a reliable secondary source of information?
    • Yes
  • Are the sources thorough - i.e. Do they reflect the available literature on the topic?
    • Yes
  • Are the sources current?
    • Yes, however, the research and statistics could be updated by a few years.
  • Check a few links. Do they work?
    • Yes

Sources and references evaluation[edit]

Guiding questions
  • Is the article well-written - i.e. Is it concise, clear, and easy to read?
    • Yes
  • Does the article have any grammatical or spelling errors?
    • No
  • Is the article well-organized - i.e. broken down into sections that reflect the major points of the topic?
    • Yes, but I feel as if "use in the film industry" should go under "Application" rather than "History."

Organization evaluation[edit]

Images and Media[edit]

Guiding questions
  • Does the article include images that enhance understanding of the topic?
    • Yes, but more visuals could be included
  • Are images well-captioned?

    • Yes, they are included interspersed throughout the article.
