Donald A. McQuarrie (May 20, 1937 - July 6, 2009) was an American chemist best known for his many textbooks such as “Physical Chemistry: A Molecular Approach” and “General Chemistry.”[1][2] McQuarrie graduated from Lowell Technological Institute, now part of University of Massachusetts Lowell, in 1958 with a bachelor's degree in chemistry and from John Hopkins University in 1960 with an M.A. degree in chemistry.[2] He received his Ph.D in physical chemistry from the University of Oregon under Terrell L. Hill in 1962 and was a professor at the University of California, Davis at the time of his retirement in 1994.[1][2] His research interests included non-linear dynamical systems and statistical thermodynamics of electrolyte systems.[1] McQuarrie’s wife, Carole, is also a chemist and holds a Ph.D in biochemistry.[3]
