Movement Continuum

[edit]

Movement Continuum is a contemporary dance company based in Lexington, Kentucky which was founded in November, 2010 by dancers in the Lexington area who wanted to create their own performance opportunities. They work to promote evolution and growth in their dancing and community, as well as to create a comfortable space to share their art with the city.[1] Their shows feature collaborations with local artists and writers, and are always performed in Lexington's Black Box Theater at the Downtown Arts Center. They draw inspiration from many famous dance companies, specifically including the Martha Graham Dance Company.

Dancers

[edit]

Active members of the company include Cara Terry, Ashley Roberts, Kate Hadfield, Sydney Prince, Caroline Combs, Megan Doll, Baylee Polzin, etc. The dancers come from a wide range of backgrounds, some from ballet roots, and others who were members of UK Dance Team and UK Dance Ensemble. Cara Terry, Ashley Roberts, and Kate Hadfield choreograph the shows. Artistic director, Kate Hadfield, says "MC believes in the power of art, the power of the body, and the power of a strong community".[2] She is a visionary artist, in fact Candace Chaney of LEXGO said, "If it's not magical, Kate Hadfield isn't interested.[3]

Performances

[edit]

Movement Continuum's first performance was entitled "Flaming Youth", and was performed in 2011. They have performed around 2 shows every year since then, ranging from "Down the Rabbit Hole", a show based off Alice in Wonderland, to "Finding home", a show based off themes of love and home. Their most recent show, "Ascendance", was based on the four seasons, as well as the cycles that a person goes through in their life, such as "acceptance". They use a wiRde variety of music.
