Contemporary Street Mural Art in Hartford, Connecticut
The depiction of images on walls in cities is a very ancient form of artistic expression [1] and is a very active contemporary facet of artistic expression [2], [3].
This page attempts to compile and organize examples of contemporary street mural art in the city of Hartford, Connecticut. A recent newspaper article identified a large number of street murals in the city [4]. However, there are clearly many more murals in the city than those listed in the article and artists are continuously adding, therefore, this page most likely will be “work in progress” for quite some time. Since painting on walls in cities can be done almost by anyone at any time, the characteristics and quality of the representations can vary a great deal. Ideally, this page will contain examples of creative work by artists that have given serious thought to their planned work and have dedicated significant time and effort to the endeavor either commissioned or not and either made with permission or not. Ideally, each entry should contain its precise location, a brief description of the work and if possible, some information about the artist.
Hartford is comprised of seventeen distinct neighborhoods and mural art can be found in most if not all of them. To organize the works and facilitate subsequent editing, Hartford neighborhoods will be listed. Photographs of the works identified and selected will be gradually added. Murals in each Hartford neighborhood [5], [6] will be listed in no particular order. The initial goal was to identify at least one mural from each neighborhood. As the date of the page going online this was possible for most neighborhoods but not all. Ideally, interested people will contribute to the page by adding additional murals as well as details about the murals contained.
