Macronavirus is a type of satellite virus that infects primarily giant fresh water prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) and it causes the disease known as white tail disease (WTD). WTD has been known to cause large-scale mortality outbreaks[1] in Macrobrachium rosenbergii population in multiple fresh water rivers and ponds.

Macronovirus is the lone genus in the Sarthroviridae family, and only contains one recognized species, the Macrobrachium satellite virus 1, often referred to as the extra small virus (XSV). Macrobrachium satellite virus 1 is a satellite virus of the Marcobrachium resonbergii nodavirus (MRNV). The infection of Macronovirus requires the hots cell to be co-infected with MRNV as the latter is essential for the survival its survival, replication and eventual propagation. They have exhibit spherical shape and contain a monopartite linear, positive-sense ssRNA genome[2]. Macronovirus virions are non-enveloped and it capsid is about 15 nm (approximately) in diameter. Two structural proteins have been identified as the subunits of the capsid. The capsid proteins are CP-17 and CP16. [3]

Macronoviruses are known to infect freshwater prawn, and the infection manifests as the white tail disease[1].

Multiple isolates have been recovered from different geographical regions as: Taiwan, Thailand, China and India.[1]
