Archiving History of Ghana (Case study of Forts and Castles)

In 2023, we embarked on a project for Creative Commons to document some of the forts and castles in Ghana that were missing from Wikimedia Commons.

The project aims to tell and archive the stories of our heritage and the toils of our forefathers through photos and videos of the sites that contributed to the liberation of Ghana.

The project achieved remarkable outcomes. We covered our target areas and produced a total of 360 images and videos for Wikimedia Commons under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International license. All 360 images and videos were uploaded to the “Forts and Castles in Ghana” category on Wikimedia Commons for accessibility and public use.

We have also updated these forts and castles articles on Wikipedia with the current images documented to provide more understanding of these historical sites in Ghana and Africa as a whole.
