Rudolf Maximilian Butler
[edit]Early Life and Family
[edit]Rudolf Maximilian Butler was a well-known architect and engineer born in Dublin on the 30 September 1872. He was the only son of John Butler who was his father. John Butler was originally from County Carlow and worked as a barrister. His mothers' name was Augusta Butler, her maiden name was Brassart and was a German from Schleswig-Holstein.[2] He was educated in Dublin up until the age of ten years old, he then continued his education and remained in Germany after the death of his father, John Butler, in 1882.[1]
At the age of 16 years old he made the decision of returning to Dublin and became a pupil of James Joseph Farrell from the years 1889 to 1891, and then of Walter Glynn Doolin from 1891-1896. Butler had spent a transient amount of time working in the wine business prior.[1] Butler continued working with Doolin as his assistant from the year 1896 to 1899, he then became his junior partner. Butler carried on Doolin's practice after his passing in the March of 1902 in collaboration with James Louis Donnelly.[3] The architectural practice was continued as ‘Doolin, Butler & Donnelly’.[4] The practice came to an end five years later when Donnelly decided to depart and was continued as Doolin and Butler until Butler began practicing privately.[3] Butler was an architect and engineer for Rathdown Rural District Council, beginning in the year 1899. During this position as an architect and engineer, he designed more than 500 cottages in County Dublin and County Wicklow.[1]
