Fly Possum Fly

[edit]

“Fly Possum Fly” is a Christmas novelty song written by Grant Maloy Smith, which he recorded as a duet with EmiSunshine. The song serves as the basis for a children’s book of the same title.[1]

Song

[edit]

The premise of the song is that possums pull Santa’s sleigh after Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer comes down with the flu. Smith was inspired to write it, after appearing on The Tim White Bluegrass Show, a radio program in Tennessee. He said that he got the idea, after seeing pictures of possums in White’s studio. Both a bluegrass and a country version of the song were released in September of 2018.[2]

Book

[edit]

Smith wrote and illustrated a children’s book version of “Fly Possum Fly,” which was published by Headline Books, Inc. The book was introduced at the Southern Festival of Books in Nashville, Tennessee, in October 2018. Smith subsequently appeared at the West Virginia Book Festival, the Connecticut Children’s Book Fair and elsewhere during the fall of 2018.[3][4]
