Purnode (in Walloon Purnôde) is a part of Yvoir a Belgian municipality located in Wallonia, more precisely in the Province of Namur.

It was a municipality of its own until 1977 when it merged with Yvoir.

There are a lot of potales (small niche or chapel (often inset into a wall) to the Virgin) made of blue stones and bricks in the village.

Purnode has a water system from 1913 and has electricity since 1917.

Etymology

According to Carnoy, the name « Purnode » would refer to plum trees wood (Pronote in the 10th century). The ending –ode was often a Romanisation of the Germanic word wald (woods).

Economy

The brewery Brasserie du Bocq is situated in the village. It was founded in 1858. Handmade beers are made there such as La Gauloise, Blanche de Namur, Applebocq, Deugniet, Triple Moine, ...

History

On 12th May 1940, during the Battle of France Purnode was the place of the confrontation between the 1st battalion of the 14th dragoon regiment and the Germans from Voraus-Abteilung Werner. Many tanks of both sides were destroyed and Purnode fell into the hands of the Germans after the French withdrawal.
