Luis Guillermo Shum Apuy (born July 16, 2007) is a 6 foot Costa Rican basketball player of Chinese descent[1]. Known for his contributions to the Escazú Basketball[2] Team, a semi-professional club, he has gained recognition in youth basketball tournaments within Costa Rica and internationally. Beyond his athletic career, Guillermo has also gained experience in diverse professional roles, showcasing his versatility and dedication.

Early Life

Guillermo Shum was born in Costa Rica to Ho Shum Tsang and Romelia Apuy Cheang. He proudly embraces his Chinese heritage, which has played a significant role in shaping his upbringing. His older brother, Carlos Shum Apuy[3], is a distinguished international mathematics Olympian[4][5], renowned for winning numerous accolades[6][7] in his field. Carlos credits much of his success to Guillermo, who, from an early age, served as a source of inspiration and encouragement. Guillermo’s unwavering support introduced Carlos to the worlds of robotics, physics, and mathematics, sparking his passion for science. Notably, Guillermo also played a key role[8] in teaching Carlos the fundamentals of combinatorics, further fostering his academic achievements.

Guillermo Shum alongside his family; continues to reside in Costa Rica, where he successfully balances his professional endeavors and athletic career.

Basketball Career

Guillermo's basketball career began at a young age, playing for Escazú[9], one of Costa Rica’s prominent semi-professional basketball teams. His athleticism and dedication have helped him achieve notable milestones in youth basketball.

YBOA U18 Championship: On July 10th, Guillermo, alongside his Escazú teammates, won the Youth Basketball[10] of America (YBOA[11]) Under-18 Championship in Costa Rica. This victory solidified his status as a rising talent in Costa Rican basketball.

Copa Internacional Promesas[12]: On December 20th, 2023, Guillermo and the Escazú team finished as runners-up[13] in the "Copa Internacional Promesas," an international competition showcasing young basketball talents.

BSCR sports festival: On May 19, Guillermo Shum and his varsity high school team, triumphed over many schools from all over Costa Rica and ended up winning the Basketball tournament held by the BSCR. Guillermo, the team captain and the highest leading scorer in the competition, also went on to be the MVP of the festival.

Standing at 6 feet tall, Guillermo’s height allows him to easily drive by opponents, maneuver in close spaces, and rapidly change pace while still being able to comfortably finish over tall players.
