Chonticha Jaengrew is a human rights defender and a member of the New Democracy Movement and the Democracy Restauration Group, two organisations playing a prominent role in campaigning for human rights and democracy since the military took power in May 2014.
She has participated in or co-founded three campaigning groups since the coup, including the Thai Students Centre for Democracy, New Democracy Movement, and the Democracy Restoration Group. She has faced threats, harassment, detention and prosecution for peacefully campaigning for human rights.[1]
Early life and education
[edit]Chonticha Jaengraew was born on 16 December 1992 in Pak Kret District, Nonthaburi Province. She is a pro-democracy campaigner and as of 2018, a postgraduate student at the Institute of Human Rights and Peace Studies, Mahidol University.[2]
Activism and prosecution
[edit]Chonticha has been a prominent student activist for civil and political rights since the 2014 military coup and ensuing crackdown on civil society by the military government. She has participated in or co-founded three campaigning groups since the coup, including the Thai Students Centre for Democracy, New Democracy Movement, and the Democracy Restoration Group. Chonthicha has also faced online and offline harassment and threats.[2][1] Despite official restrictions, she and other students have continued to carry out small-scale peaceful protests calling for democracy, rule of law and an end to unlimited use of powers by the military government. As a result, she currently faces criminal proceedings and an unfair trial before a military and civilian court.
In June 2015, she was injured on arrest and detained for 12 days in prison for participating in a silent, peaceful gathering on the first anniversary of the coup. [3]
In May 2018, Chonticha and other 14 pro-democracy human rights defenders, including Anon Nampa, Rangsiman Rome, Sirawith Seritiwat, Chonticha Jaengrew, and Piyarat Chongthep, were arrested and charged with sedition, with violating the junta’s ban on political gatherings of five people or more, and under the Road Traffic Act for participating in peaceful pro-democracy demonstrations in Bangkok.[4]
