Ukiah Ambulance Service is a private Advanced Life Support (Paramedic) ground transport ambulance company serving central and southern Mendocino County. It is the longest continuously running and largest ambulance company in Mendocino County history.[1] Ukiah Ambulance also developed the first air rescue service in Mendocino County called “FlightCare” which operated for ten years out of the Ukiah Municipal Airport.
Ground Operations[edit]
The company offers emergency services to the Ukiah Valley, Redwood Valley, Willits, Hopland, Potter Valley, and many other unincorporated areas within designated response zones. Ukiah Ambulance also provides backup assistance to Round Valley (Covelo) and Anderson Valley (Boonville), which both provide basic life support (BLS) ambulance services.
Ambulances are staffed with two personnel; one EMT and one Paramedic and use Dodge Sprinter ambulances for front-line equipment. Ambulances are equipped with the following:
-Zoll E-series cardiac monitor/defibrillator
-Intravenous line pumps
-Pediatric resuscitation kits
-Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)
-Airway management equipment (oral intubation, needle cricothyrotomy, needle thoracentesis)
-GPS mapping and routing
Medical Operations[edit]
Ukiah Ambulance operates under regulations imposed by Coastal Valleys EMS (CVEMS), which is a local emergency medical services agency (LEMSA) based out of Santa Rosa, CA.
There are three designated receiving hospitals in Mendocino County: Ukiah Valley Medical Center, Howard Memorial Hospital, and Mendocino Coast District Hospital. For patients requiring emergent higher levels of service, such as trauma or cardiac patients, aircraft are deployed. California Shock Trauma Air Rescue (CALSTAR) and REACH provide primary air transportation to Mendocino County
In addition to providing ambulance transportation, Ukiah Ambulance coordinates with the Mendocino County Sheriffs Office to provide tactical paramedics. Specially trained paramedics assigned to law enforcement duties provide Advanced Life Support in the “hot zone” during high risk SWAT operations. This mission-critical operation facilitates rapid aid to a downed officer or wounded suspect. Accomplishments[edit]
In 2012 Ukiah Ambulance received 501(c)(3) exemption from the Internal Revenue Service. In July 2012, Ukiah Ambulance will transition into a not-for-profit ambulance service called "Medstar Ambulance of Mendocino County, Inc." Functioning as a not-for-profit ambulance service will empower Medstar to provide innovative medical care though joint ventures with local volunteer agencies, grant opportunities, and membership services.Website
