The Uvverside & Backwards and Return to the Uvverside[edit]

'The Uvverside & Backwards' and 'Return to the Uvverside' are the creations of a fairly unknown Brighton based artist known generally as 'Hobbie'.

The controversial cartoons began around 2002 whilst he was working for a utility company in Portslade and claims them to be "An invention of sheer bordem that shows the darkest thoughts of those stuck in repetitive and menial roles" commenting that "everybody should always be wary of the quiet kid".

Most of the original works are drawn on the backs of company headed paper and many others sketched rapidly on the backs of old work orders and office notes.

Whilst many people have commented that the often dark and twisted captions that complement the images have some form of deeper meaning Hobbie will only go as far as to say "they do, but not in the way you think. Some guy got shot because he happened to answer his front door, the guys that shot him had got the wrong address. It wasn't him they were after, all he did was open the door. I actually found this quite funny and did a cartoon about it. The cartoon is drawn from the killers point of view as he realises in the aftermath that it was completly the wrong person - whoops".

The series is still growing and has appeared in a few of Brightons free magazines, it has also appeared adorning the walls of a few of Brightons pubs and clubs, though the artist claims no responsibility for this.

Other cartoons appearing from Hobbie include 'Death on...' a rather macabre series of cartoons which sees death discussing his feelings on certain subjects. One such cartoon features death in a pub raising a pint of beer under the heading 'Death on the festive season' with the caption 'So I said "Hello Mrs Scott, is your husband home?"'

The future of these cartoons is fairly unknown but next time you see one about Brighton at least you know where it came from.
