The John Muir Award is an environmental award scheme focused on wild places. It encourages awareness and responsibility for the natural environment, in a spirit of fun, adventure and exploration.[7]
Four challenges lie at the heart of the John Muir Award. Each participant engages in a range of activities to Discover a wild place, Explore what makes it wild, help Conserve it, and Share their experiences.[8]
The John Muir Award is run by the John Muir Trust, both taking their name from John Muir (1838 - 1914), often considered to be the father of the world conservation movement. He urged everyone to 'Do something for wildness and make the mountains glad'.[9]
Over 50,000 people across the UK have received a John Muir Award. A quarter of those who achieve an Award are from backgrounds of social exclusion and 90% are under 25.[10]
