The New Hampshire Theater Awards are a group of honors bestowed upon various professional and community theaters throughout the U.S. state of New Hampshire. There are 19 categories each for both profesional and community theater, with a top five for professional and a top ten for community announced for each award prior to the awards ceremony.[1] [2] The awards were first handed out in 2002,[3] and in 2010, 41 companies submitted performances to be judged.[3]
History[edit]
The New Hampshire Theatre Awards were founded in 2002 and until 2011 were presented at the Palace Theatre in Manchester, NH. For 2012 the Stockbridge Theatre on the campus of Pinkerton Academy was chosen as the site for the 2011 NH Theatre Awards. It is the intent of the NHTA Operations Committee to present subsequent Awards Nights in appropriate venues throughout New Hampshire on a rotating basis.[3] The NH Theatre Awards were founded with the purpose "to promote New Hampshire theatre to each other and beyond, and to raise the already high standard of theatre that exists in NH."[4]. In 2009 it became a 501(c)3 nonprofit, and for the 2010 season, an award for Youth Theatre was added.[3]
Requirements[edit]
The New Hampshire Theater Awards are chosen by individuals adjudicating various performances across the state.[5] Each Theatrical company is allowed to submit two performances from their season to be nominated for the awards. A third production can be nominated if it is an original work.[3] Adjudication volunteers are supplied by each theatrical company that submits a performance.[5] Each company supplies one volunteer adjudicator for each production it nominates for the awards.[3] These volunteers are assigned to performances at other theater to judge. There are five adjudications for each performance put up for the awards, with the lowest and highest of these scores not counted.[5]
