regions under Company rule in India (ending 1858) and governed by the British East India Company's representative, the Governor-General of India.^[1] The regions consisted of: Bengal Presidency, the Madras Presidency, and the Bombay Presidency.
regions under the British Raj in India (1858 to 1947) that were directly administered by the British Government India Office and by the Viceroy and Governor-General of India in the name of the British Crown.^[2] The regions consisted of the Provinces of British India and contrasted with the Native States over which the Crown only had suzerainty.

"British India" has also been used in the sense of "the British in India."^[3]
