Cryptamnesia is a term coined by Théodore Flournoy to describe the occurrence of spontaneously recalling a forgotten memory without recognizing it. Because of this, the subject believes they are new memories, or uses the information recalled out of context. Cryptamnesia is often used to explain things such as false memory syndrome, how people are able to clearly recall past lives (which sometimes turn out to be a collection of details from forgotten movies, books, etc.), or why someone might "come up with an idea" that someone else has clearly thought of first.
