Mis-adventures of Americana, running screenplay
Episode 1
Josh: you ever noticed how everything is sort of connected to everything else. How a single event can cause a whole series of events, like dominoes, or card house collapse. That’s kind of how things are for me, the reason I’m dressed like a hood ornament from the 80’s is the indirect effect of a very disturbing cause, and went a little like this.
The camera fades into the lab of beaker industrial equipment, linus rampart is marching toward the buildings main video conferencing room to receive the governments final say in the resent military contract bid for an exosuit for disabled veterans. He is barely in time to take a seat in the room.
Mr wendall: You’re late again mr. Rampart.
Linus: Sorry sir, I was looking over some of BIT, and there seems to be a lot of superfluous components. I know it is far too late to make a new proposal, but for the production we could easily remove…
Linus is interrupted by the conference projector. General burlingon appears on the screen and delivers decision.
Burlington: Good morning. As of 0600 this morning, army has decided to pursue full development for design offered by stark industries. The remaining 2 companies will be contracted to aid in the manufacturing of the stark design. Your country wishes to thank all parties involved in the competition and appreciate your hard work and dedication.
The projector shuts off and everyone in the room begins to leave. Linus, now somewhat down trodden by the news, begins to leave when a thiought comes to his mind. He wonders what is to happen to BIT
linus this project was my life, and now is everything that i had worked so long is going to be scrapped. I can’t let it end like this.
Linus now determined to rescue his then lifes work, stopped in the hall and began to walk backl to find mr wendall, who had already reached his office. Linus enter the room
linus sir, i don’t want to sound too forward or impertanent, but what is to become of the BIT unit?
Wendall scrapped. Everything on it and involved with it is to be destroyed come tommorrow morning.

Wendall i know that this was mainly your project. You designed most of the functions mechanism, but i can’t just give a piece of technology worth more than my house. Additionally, there are somethings about this project that you don’t know about, things that are above even me, is that clear.
Linus sighsand begins to leave the office
wendall linus, i don’t mean to snap, this is just a bad time to ask. If its any consolation, i’m greatly impressed by the amount of work that you put into bit, and i have already put your name to aid in the new ford request for a single person vehicle.
linus really!?
Wendall yes, you’ll find the assignment on your desk.
Linus thank you sir. Does this mean i’m full time now?
Wendall though bit failed, wew decided that yoyur performance in the project was more than enough to confirm your employment

Linus then leaves the office and heads to his work station he begins to think to himself.
Linus in his head well on the plus i have finally been confirmed, but i can’t let bit be destroyed...wait a minute

the dumpster!!!
camera cuts to a school cafeteria, josh is walking with a full tray of food when dave brandon walks up and pushes Elijah turvin to floor. In direct retaliation, josh takes his tray and dumps it onto brandon, brandon is caught off guard while josh proceeds to help the Elijah up and out to the nurses office.
Josh You okay
Elijah no
Brandon rampart
Josh makes it to the hallway, but is grabbed from behind by brandon and thrown into the wall of lockers. Brandon recoils and prepares to punch josh in the face, josh drops to the floor and rolls between brandons legs, josh sings
Josh Low bridge, everybody down, low bridge, davey’s underwear is brown, brown, brown, it smells like he got the pooties, ooh, oohties
Brandon Shut up!
Brandon tries his hardest to hit josh, but josh remains keeps his distance, and waits for Brandon to punch with his left. Brandon makes the fatal mistake and is thrown to the floor by.
Josh Had enough?
Brandon I’m gonna kick tail from here to Chicago
Josh I’ll be surprised if you even know what state that’s in.
Brandon does a flying tackle, and both he and josh begin rolling on the floor. The two are interrupted by the school security guard and the principle. The camera cuts, to josh and Brandon sitting outside of the principle’s office
Brandon One day i’ll wash you away
Josh Please, you have a hard enough time washing your underpants
Josh’s mom walks in sits next to josh. Principle walks out of his office and motions for josh and his mother to enter.
Principle Sorry to see you again under these circumstances mrs. Rampart
Josh’s mom You don’t need to apologize, my son is the one
Josh, But…
Josh’s mom Not here…not now
Principle According to most of the other students, josh dumped an entire tray of food onto david Brandon after Brandon pushed another student to the floor. A fight ensued just outside the cafeteria.
Josh’s mom I see
Principle I’m afraid that he must be sent home for the rest of today
Josh’s mom Very well
Josh and mom leave the room, camera cuts to them in the car talking
Mom I’m waiting.

josh is rolling his eyes as she talks, a long pause in the car ensue, but is broken by mom
mom i never had this problem with dexter or linus
josh i’m not an out of work P.I. Or an eccentric nerd, i

they arrive home, josh is sent immediately to his room where is lays on his bed contemplating, his mom is down stairs cooking dinner. Linus arrives at the home
linus Hi mom whats wrong
mom your brother got into another fight
linus is he grounded
mom your father will decide that when he gets home
linus can i borrow him for a few hours before you let the hammer down
mom it isn’t a fun outing is it
linus no, its more of a search-n-salvage mission

camera cuts into a night scene in the loading docks at the back of beaker industries, josh and linus are sneaking their way through the security gates and to the dumpster
josh i can’t believe that you talked mom into letting me come
linus i needed some help doing this
josh are you sure this is legal
linus we are merely going through the trash and dumpster diving ok, just keep your eye for any security guards
josh man, this is as bad as the time we took those laptops out of the campus recycling center
linus no its not, we’re no where near a blast furnace
the two reach the main dumpster, linus gives josh a hand up into the dumpster, josh begins rummaging through the trash.
Josh why am i the one going through the trash and not you
linus you can’t lift me, just keep it down and fill the bag
josh what am i looking for again?
Linus a helmet, a pair of boots, and pieces that look like really high-tech tomato cages
josh looks down and shakes his head while linus is looking for any security guards, josh makes quick bussiness of the dumpster and hops out,
linus did you get it all that fast?
the two are cut short by a security guard and gives them chase, the two run back to the perimeter fence and into the bordering bushs.
Josh this is just like at the campus recycling center
linus no its not, the guard didn’t even pull his gun, now lets get this thing home before the cops arrive
the two return to linus geo metro and head to linus apartment, where linus has a complete development lab using home brewed equipment. The two begin to unpack and reassemble bit from the salvaged pieces
josh explain it to me again brain, what is it
linus it is the beaker industry testbed, or bit for short
josh that thing you’ve been working on for the last 6 months?! I thought you said it was cancelled and destroyed
linus it was supposed to be, but bits components were somehow switched with scrap metal that curiously resembles bit
josh so we stole it
linus its not stealing when you designed it almost single handedly
josh so why didn’t you just take the blue prints?
Linus they confiscated all research material on bit, even my work computers hard drive. Besides, this give us a working model, cutting the total research and development significantly
the two continue piecing together bits componentnts
linus oh buttermilk.
Josh what is it?
Linus we’re missing the shoulder bracing and hip rigging
josh it was cold and smelly in there, plus if we hadn’t left then we would’ve been found out
linus yeah, but it’ll take me a month or longer to reconstruct those parts from scratch
josh can’t we go back and get them, or you get them in the morning?
Linus oh thats original, first off the security guard saw us, probably thinking we’re a pair of hobos looking for scrap to sell and alerted the police. Second, since those pieces are in that dumpster, and if the police notice them and we show looking for them…
josh I get the point
Linus No way around those parts, I’ll just have to make them myself
Josh Can I ask a stupid question

Josh What are boots for
Linus The boots are electromagnetic, they help people stay balanced
Josh But that would only work if your on a metallic surface.
Linus I know, I didn’t work on that portion of the suit, mine was the interface helmet
Josh It still doesn’t make sense, why would you use magnets to keep balance
Linus My best guess would be that it has no moving parts, therefore they wouldn’t be as prone to damage as a gyroscope would be
Josh I see
Screen transition, subscript “4 weeks later,” josh is wearing the wireframe version of bit, which is connected to computer, linus is at the computer adjusting the suit while josh moves the suit
Josh What am I doing again
Linus We are fine tuning the motor controls manually
Josh I thought you said that the suit did this automatically, the left wrist is a little slow
Linus Got it. Its supposed to, but there is something wrong with the onboard hard drive, so I am compiling a substitution on the computer
Josh Why not reformat the hard drive, the right elbow
linus elbow? When I try to power up the suit, all I get is this readout, here look
Linus motions for josh to look at the screen, on the screen is a sinusoidal graph
Josh So
Linus This is a readout of human brain activity while sleeping
The screen shows 2 readouts that are almost identical
Josh Deus ex machina?
Linus Please no puns. What ever is left on the hard drive is somehow still active, I’m hoping that I can salvage whatever is left, but until I can figure that out we are going to write a whole new operating system for it
Josh Whokay, that is going to take a while isn’t it
Linus Longer than it took to rebuild those missing components
Josh You had to bring that up didn’t you. its not my fault
Linus You were the in one the dumpster, not me
Josh Oh, I’m sorry, I’m not the one who had to salvage this piece of junk because it became my life

Josh I guess I will then
Josh leaves the apartment and heads for home on foot mad as a hornet, the next day josh is out with his friends at a starbucksesque coffee shop / bookstore.
Josh So then I left

The conversation is broken when josh’s cell phone begins ringing
Josh Hold that thought…yellow…at the green, why?...what!?...slow down, what happened to linus?
Josh’s complection turns pale and disturbed
Elijah Hey, you okay?
Josh Linus’s is dead
Elijah What?
Josh They found his car at the bottom of ceasars creek, my mom is on her way to get me
camera fade, josh and his mom are sitting in the holding room of the city mortuary, josh’s mom is in tears, josh sits quietly pondering. Josh’s father walks into the room, josh’s father only nods, josh’s mom is now waling, and a group hug ensues. Subscript “3 days later” josh is standing with his parents at the funeral, people are milling about
mr. wendall we are extremely sympathetic, if there is anything I can do personally, please let me know

josh spies an old school rival of linus’s, victor Novato, and walks to confront him
josh victor, what are you doing here?
Novato Paying my respect to a departed friend

Novato Still as fiery as ever, my younger sister says that you’re far more popular than your brother was at your age. can’t say I’m surprised, linus wasn’t a people person, but what he lacked in persona he made for with sheer intellect and cunning. I know you are think I’m here to gloat over his grave, but that is qute contrary
Josh Really now
Novato Though I hated him, I respected him. Now that he is gone, I have no rival, no equal to do battle with. Above that, we had so much unfinished business, excuse me for a moment josh.
Novato leaves the room, the crowd in the funeral home increased, josh finds it hard to get back to parents, but manages to be caught by his elder half brother, dexter gardner,
Dexter Josh, why were you arguing with him
Josh I was not
Dexter Nevermind, lets get to mom and dad
The two make the family seating in the funeral, as the preacher gives the eulogy, josh looks around and sees almost a sea of people, josh begins to recount their argument the day before linus’s death
Josh in his head This from the man with no friends outside of his immediate family and coworkers, who chooses to spend his time working for some mythical goal. Look at you, you haven’t been outside for so long your skin is whiter than an egg. Not that anybody wants to be around you, your so boring that the only person with a more deadpan personality is a corpse…
The camera fades into the cemetery, josh is standing over linus’s grave, dexter’s family leave with mr. and mrs. Rampart, dexter stays with josh.
Dexter Remember, he’s not really there, he’s in a better place
Josh I know, but…I…I never had the chance to apologize
Dexter He probably already knows, and more than likely he’s just as sorry as you are
The two stand there in silence,
Dexter Come-on, you have to get home, I got a case a I’m working on…
Josh How can you do that

Josh You act as if nothing has happened
Dexter he wouldn’t want us standing around doing nothing but mourning, he wasn’t like that. Quite frankly, if things were switched, he probably would get right back to work on what you 2 were doing. in his mind a finished work would be a more memorial than his head stone
dexter walks out to his car, a slightly sporty sedan, and josh ponders on what dexter said. Josh then turns to walk to the car. Camera fades, a musical montage begins with josh moving bit and the equipment from linus’s apartment into his room and constructing bit, alternating scenes of josh working on bit and going to school half a sleep, ending with josh walking down the hall and being pushed by Brandon into a locker
Brandon Hey josh, I bet your brother is having some barbeque
Josh is immediately inflamed with rage, punches Brandon knocking him to the floor, Elijah comes to josh and tries to hold him back from lunging at brandon
Brandon Awe, did I find a nerve
Elijah Hey, Lay off him
Brandon So you’re his defense now
Josh I don’t need a defense to beat scum up like you
Brandon Ooh, I’m so scared
Josh You and I both know I can beat you pulp anytime, anywhere
Brandon You n me, after school
Brandon walks away, the crowd disperses, and josh and Elijah begin to walk to their next class
Elijah You aren’t going to be there
Josh You can’t tell me what to do
Elijah No, but I know who can, and if I have to I will call your mom
Josh Don’t bother
Elijah What is with you man, I haven’t seen you outside of school for over week
Josh I’ve been busy

Camera cuts to josh walking out of school, Brandon is waiting in the neighboring parking lot. josh only stares and begins to move in that direction, but Elijah catches him
Elijah You’ll regret it
Josh I don’t care
Elijah You don’t live more than 3 blocks from here, I have a cellphone, and I know how your mom drives in an emergency
Josh’s expression becomes darker, Brandon sees and begins to taunt him, Elijah pulls his cellphone from his pocket. Josh backs down and begins to walk home, Elijah follows him
Elijah Hey, wait up

Josh I’m busy
Elijah That excuse only works once for me, either you tell me what it is your working on, or I’m dragging you out somewhere to have some fun

Camera cuts into josh’s room, josh and Elijah enter, the room is a wreck, parts are strooned about the floor and josh’s bed is unmade

Josh begins to put the suit on

Elijah moves toward the door

Elijah leaves and slams the door, josh sighs and begins to work more on bit at his desk. Camera time lapses, josh is now asleep at his desk, the computer screen with the readout of bits on board hard drive changes. Josh wakes up and notices the computer screen flickering, josh is visibly shocked
Josh What on earth
Mrs. Rampart yells to josh Josh, you’re going to be late for school
Josh Just a minute
Josh is still in his clothes from the day before but unknowingly is still wearing bit, josh leaves the room and heads down the stairs. Josh runs out the door and heads for school, but he is running faster than normal, josh realizes this and finally notices that bit is still on him, but can’t go home and change because of the time. Camera cuts to school hallway, josh is walking to his class, he walks by a kid who does a really bad chicken imitation. Josh meets up with Elijah
Elijah Hey Quasimodo, are going to go to the church function

Josh realizing that he is still wearing the interface, thinks fast

The 2 hear the bell ring and enter a room, camera cuts to the lunch room, josh is eating his lunch with Elijah, Brandon walks up to him followed by his goons
Josh Great, ali-caht and his harem
Brandon Well look who’s here boys. Hey rampart, what happened to anytime, anywhere
Josh You wanna finish yesterday
Elijah Josh
Brandon Stay out of this
Brandon then throws a punch at josh, bit becomes active. Brandon’s goons then tries to grab josh, but bit begins to take over josh’s motor functions, and josh is finding it easy to evade their attacks. Josh then grabs one of the goons and throws him at Brandon, the remaining goon is scared away.
Brandon You little freak
Brandon throws another punch, josh grabs his fist and throws Brandon over 3 tables. Josh is as shocked as the crowd, the principle with security guards run into the cafeteria, The camera cuts, to josh and Brandon sitting outside of the principle’s office, brandon’s arm is in a sling and has a black eye, while josh has a minor bruise on his cheek

Josh’s mom walks in sits next to josh. Principle walks out of his office and motions for josh and his mother to enter.
Principle Sorry to see you yet again under these circumstances mrs. Rampart

Mrs. Rampart I understand completely
Josh and mom leave the room, camera cuts to them in the car talking
Mrs. rampart Josh, I know linus’s death was hard you, it was hard on all of us, but that doesn’t excuse your behavior

Mrs. Rampart You are not allowed to work on that thing in your room until you go back to school, is that understood.

Camera cuts to josh in his room, he sits at his desk and begins looking over bit and notices the activity of bit system. josh flashs back to him and linus working on bit. josh is wearing the wireframe version of bit, which is connected to computer, linus is at the computer adjusting the suit while josh moves the suit

Flashback ends, josh is thinking about what has happened, and why the suit acted in the manner it did. Time lapse, josh leaves his house in the middle of the night and heads for the abandoned cement factory at the edge of town, josh runs along but then notices that the he again running faster than a normal person. Once josh is at the cement factory, he tries lifting blocks of cement and throws them with relative ease, josh is both pleased and perplexed by this, and begins to try lifting blocks several times his size, with him finding the limit to be about 3 times his size. He then looks up at one of the silos, josh runs toward the silo at an inhuman speed, bit’s boot light up, and josh begins running up the silo. Josh reaches the top and goes airborne landing on top of the silo. Josh is shocked, but very happy with the development.
Josh Whoa!!!!

Josh is caught off guard by the voice

Josh So the whole BIT…project was really a front for the government’s…new super soldier program…and you’re the…ai system for the suit
Bit In case my host goes, as they called it, rogue, I would take over their motor functions entirely
Josh So…you are…the plan b
Bit In a manner of speaking
Josh Have you…been…on the whole time…me and my brother…were working on you
Bit I was in a state of suspended animation
Josh A sleep cycle…did you dream about electric sheep

Josh So why…didn’t talk or…notify us…that you were…alive
Bit I wanted to see if you were the right host for me
Josh How
Bit I wanted to observe your day to day mannerisms to see if you could meet my expectations
Josh Why

Josh is quiet, with a concentrated look on his face, they stop at the edge of a rooftop josh notices a police chase in the streets below.
Josh How fast can we run
Bit Not run, host, skate
The boots have a light glow about them, and josh begins to hover an inch. Josh then leaps from the perch, and skates on the side of the building, then using a light pole to quickly change direction from vertical to horizontal. He then quickly catches up to the enemy car. As he skates next to the car, the crooks take aim and shoot, Joshua dodges and skates into a neighboring allayway. The cop car speeds past the alleyway. Josh and bit return home at around sunrise, and sneak back into his room through his window, josh begins to take bit off
Bit I owe a great deal to you host

Josh I see…(yawn)…I have to sleep now…I’ll leave you connected to the internet

Josh gets into bed

Josh falls asleep, camera time lapses to mid afternoon, josh is still in bed bit is surfing the internet at an accelerated rate. Elijah bursts into the room
Elijah You’re still in bed, its 4 pm
Josh What
Elijah Come on, you gotta get ready for the youth meeting
Josh 5 more minutes

Elijah flips the mattress throwing josh to the floor. Camera cuts to josh and Elijah walking to their church
Josh You could have used an ice pack or something
Elijah I prefer the more direct approach
The 2 enter the church and take their seat with the rest of the youth group and are greeted by their youth pastor

Elijah You wouldn’t what it takes to get him out

Josh I’m fine, I just got a lot on my mind

Josh begins to think, and flashes back his fight with linus

Josh I guess I will then
Josh returns to reality, and the group discussion begins. Time lapses, josh is alone in the sanctuary, staring at the cross
Josh Lord, I know that I have been selfish, unkind, and generally a jerk, but I want to change all that…I want to do something, I want to change…What do I do?
Josh stands there staring at the cross, he begins to turn away, but drops his Bible. The Bible opens up to the verse that was read that night. Josh looks back at the cross and smiles, camera fades to josh entering his room.
Josh Hey, bit

Josh is standing on a roof top over looking the street below. He is dressed in a make shift costume consisting of blue jeans and a sweat shirt with an American flag on it. As he ponders about life, he observes a police chase in the streets below. And ever eager beaver, Josh leaps from the perch, and skates on the side of the building, then using a light pole to quickly change direction from vertical to horizontal. He then quickly catches up to the enemy car. As he skates next to the car, the crooks take aim and shoot, Joshua dodges and skates into a neighboring allayway. A block later, Joshua is front of the car and grabs the front end, effectively stopping the car within 30ish feet. The crooks are stunned completely, the cops finally arrive and take aim at Josh, who in turn leaps to a nearby power-line, the camera raises to the night and fades to black.
