Covent Garden Market is an indoor market located in downtown London, Ontario, with various merchants, restaurants, events and a bi-weekly farmer's market. Located near Budweiser Gardens and Fanshawe College's downtown campus, the area has lots of foot traffic. The market offers a variety of fresh produce, international grocery and in-house dining experiences. Seasonal offerings include pop-up farmer's markets, an outdoor skating rink, art and entertainment showcases and various programs.

History

[edit]

Early History

[edit]

The idea for the market dates back to 1835. At the time, a patent was issued for a "public fair or mart" in the area.[1] Farmers would visit the market three days a week -- Tuesday's, Thursday's and Saturday's -- to sell crops and produce.[2] In 1845, surrounding businesses offered portions of their land around Richmond, Dundas and King Street for the market's permanent location.[3] The market became a central hub in the city where buyers and sellers would meet to socialize and negotiate deals on produce, meat and other supplies until World War I.[4]

First Renovation

[edit]

The rise of automobiles began presenting logistical problems on the structure of a traditional market. In 1955, a group of nine men formed the Covent Garden Building Inc. The new owners remodelled the building to accommodate automobiles with four parking levels and an entirely new market building.

Second Renovation

[edit]

By 1998, the market required additional upgrades. In October of 1999, thousands of London citizens gathered to watch the reveal of the second renovation.[5] The Covent Garden Market is a central feature of the city's culture and remains a long-standing tradition within the community.
