GURUNG CASTE.

Generally speaking, the Gurungs are divided into two castes (Jaat in the local tongue); Char (Four) and the sora (sixteen) or 'Pachyu' in Gurung language. Within the Char Jaat there exists further sub-divisions: namely Ghale, Pangi-Lama, Ghotane, and Lamichhane. As Ghale were tge Kings of the Gurung tribe, they stick to writing their own caste 'Ghale'. Notable Ghale : Sesh Ghale.

As 'Char Jaate' people were in the prominent position amongst the Gurungs, they tended not to work hard and live happy life. So, most of their work were done by Pachyus and were paid doing the given task. Performing funerals also falls on the list. In Hindu community priests are known to be of 'Higher class' but in Gurung it is just opposite.

But the cultural norms and values of Char-Jaate Gurungs nowdays are somehow influenced by the Tibetans. Tibetan priests perform all rituals, and Char-Jaate Gurungs are mainly Buddhists. However Sora-Jaate Gurungs did not change their religion Bonism and bon priest performs all rituals for them.

Gurung Marriage

Marriages are performed within their own sub-caste. Char Jaates will marry within themselves but not with their same caste same goes to Pachyus.

As Ghales were the Kings they married people belonging to higher caste Pangi-Lama, Ghotane, and Lamichhane.
