History[edit]

The simplistic tune known the world over as Auld Lang Syne was written by a man who was born in Swalwell near Gateshead, and baptized William Shield, son of William Shield and his wife, Mary, nee Cash, in 1748. (The Shields were in Swalwell as far back as 1696).
