Super Mario Universe: UniMaker + UniPlayer is fangame developed by Mario Silva with contributions from the community supporting the project. The game is based on various titles in the Mario franchise.[1]

Development[2]

[edit]
  • 2014

The game started off as a 2D adaptation of the game Super Mario 3D World under the title Super Mario 2D World. At the time, only a few trailers were released of it in its alpha state. It had a simple art style resembling some NES titles.

Some months later, the project was reworked into an original game that used various concepts and elements from Super Mario Galaxy, but in 2D. At this time, it was also rebranded as Super Mario 2D Universe. The soundtrack was initially going to compose of various covers in the style of SNES titles.

  • 2015

In May 2015 the first public beta was released for the game, featuring a major shift in direction from ambient art and game-level elements to a more detailed but still SNES-like.

In August, a prototype for a level editor was developed as an extra mode of the game. A few months later, an alpha version was publicly released. The interface was based on the interface seen in early demonstrations of Super Mario Maker.

  • 2016

In March 2016, the first beta demo of the level editor was released, showcasing a minimalistic interface, but retained the visuals for its level elements seen in 2015.

The demo of the level editor received a very positive reception compared to the 2015 release of 2D Universe. Later that year in June a second beta demo was announced, but due to complications in development as well as personal life matters of the developer, it ended up being delayed several times, while the developer continued to develop it in isolation.

  • 2017

In 2017, UniMaker was announced to have been completely reprogrammed in a new engine, though all the concepts and features planned for 2D Universe would be implemented. Because of this, the project was renamed to Super Mario Universe: UniMaker + UniPlayer (or simply UniMaker + UniPlayer) to represent both demographics, the makers with Universe Maker and the players with Universe Player
