This page describes how noref bot decides to place a {{unreferenced}} template.
The bot's goal is to minimize tags to the worst cases, to reduce the amount of false positives. This weighting will create many false negatives on balance.
The algorithm includes these traps:
- Skip empty pages
- Skip if there is an external link
- Skip all stubs and redirects where possible
- Skip if section titles contain "External links", "References", "Sources", "Further reading", "Bibliography", "Notes", "Footnotes" (accounting for case and plural)
- Skip if HTML contains
<ol class="references">(ie. anything that renders reference at bottom of page) - Skip if the article contains any of over 6000+ templates including the aliases:

- Category:Disambiguation message boxes
- Category:Redirect templates
- Category:Under-construction templates
- Category:Templates for redirects relating to years
