While descending from a successful ascent of the Dent du Géant on Mont Blanc with Belgian climber, André Colard, Arthur slipped on an easy section of the path, slid down a snow slope striking a rock killing him.

Arthur is buried in Courmayeur the memorial on his grave reads: In affectionate memory of Arthur Rhodes Dolphin age 28 years of Baildon, Yorks., England died Mont Blanc 25th July 1953 from Clare, Marie, Cyril and relatives and friends

Later in 1953 Arthur was to have started work as a metallurgist at the Windscale site in Cumbria now Sellafield.
