The Great Wave

[edit]

The Great Wave is a novel by Scottish novelist and essayist Mona Caird. Published in 1931, and categorized as a social science fiction, it warns against the dangers of negative eugenics at a time when the idea was gaining popularity in Britain.

The novel is set just before the First World War. Grierson Elliot, the protagonist, is disowned by his family after his refusal to join the army. Grierson instead aspires to be a scientist. The story charts his life as he moves to London and is exposed to many new and challenging ideas. His ambitions are utopian and idealist, and he struggles to reconcile them with reality.
