Racial Transformation in American Schools
[edit]There is transformation taking place in various American communities indicating that the leading population of Europeans will no longer be the majority. Rapid change of this transformation can be seen among school populations. The national totals between 2003 and 2004 indicate that Latino students compose 19% of school populations, black students compose 17%, Asian students compose 4%, and American Indian students compose 1%. These statistics shows that the minorities are increasing at a rapid rate compared to the white population, with the populations of Latino people and Asian people increasing the most. The rapid increase in minority populations in comparison to the white population is problematic according to a study of an American neighborhood. It was found that white neighbors of a black community declared to move out of the neighborhood in the effort of finding "better schools" for their children. This study clearly indicates that the parents of white children were not happy with sending their children to school with predominantly black children. [1] [2]
Racial transformation is the process by which a demographic region (e.g., a country, neighborhood, or a school) changes in racial composition. [3] The recent transformation of racial composition within North America has been referred to as a state of 'flux'. Both racial and cultural transformations have diversified North America in recent decades. [4] 2011 marked an important change for race in the United States of America. According to the cencus bureau, for the first time in US history, more minority babies were born than white babies, the previous majority. [5] This increase in minorities shows how the demographics in the United States have transformed throughout American history.
