Cybercrimes Prevention Law in Saudi Arabia
"Cybercrime " means any criminal or other offence that is facilitated by or involves the use of electronic communications or information systems, including any device or the Internet or any one or more of them such as phishing ,hacking, credit card theft and identity theft, spamming and phishing.
We all agree on the benefit of the technology and how technology is making life easier. But in fact nothing is perfect even though technology has a great advantage it has also a dark side which is cybercrimes .Cybercrimes doesn't affect the victim only the effect extends to society as a whole. For society, cybercrimes cause the lack of confidence and insecurity of the internet users while conducting online transactions which is a major obstacle to the development of electronic commerce. For individuals, they might lose personal and private information or even money because of such cybercrimes. Considering the importance of keeping up with new technologies while achieving information security for the individuals and society and to reduce the misuse of information systems Saudi cybercrimes prevention law has been established. Saudi cybercrimes prevention law which consists of sixteen (16) provisions was issued by Royal Decree Number M/17, dated 26th March 2007.
Goals of Saudi Cybercrimes Prevention Law
[edit]Saudi Cybercrimes prevention Law was issued with the aim of limiting and preventing the cybercrimes by identifying the crimes and penalties which will lead to:
- Help to achieve information security
- Save individual rights
- Protect the public interest
- Protect the national economy
Penalties and Punishments
[edit]The law specifies the penalties for Cybercrimes including the classification of crimes in terms of punishment which is either prison or financial fine. Punishable crimes include:
- identity theft
- email theft
- credit card fraud
- unauthentic access to computers with the intention of delete or alter private data
- illegal access to a website
- hacking and cracking and other illegal activities.
