Philip Rawson

Philip Rawson served as dean of the School of Art and Design, Goldsmith's College, University of London. Prior to that, Rawson served as the curator of the Gulbenkian Museum of Oriental Art at the University of Durham.

Author of many books about art, Rawson is particularly notable for the publication of Ceramics by Oxford University Press, London,1971. Ceramics outlined a new aesthetic perspective focused on the unique materials related to ceramic production, production techniques, and the potential for ceramic forms to convey cultural symbols and meaning. Rawson's writing about ceramics and his love of pottery elevated the level of discussion and criticism related to ceramic objects. Demand for the book grew after it went out of print, and University of Pennsylvania Press issued a new edition with a forward by ceramic artist Wayne Higby (1984). From the introduction by Higby: "It is a rare book of art that presents complex aesthetic principles in clear readable form."
