John "Hollywood" Harlow Disc Jockey/Army Public Affairs Officer

Born on Sept. 16, 1966 in Norristown, Pa. and raised in Tyrone, Pa., Harlow got his start in radio at WTRN, Tyrone and WGMR, Tyrone-State College at the age of 14 when he co-hosted the Tyrone Teen Review with Ted Simpson. He would later take over afternoons throughout his years at Tyrone High School.

In 1984-85, Harlow continued to work weekends at WTRN-WGMR while attending Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania. He served as the Production Director of WSYC-FM and was the play-by-play voice of Shippensburg University football and basketball.

In 1985, Harlow moved to North Carolina and worked at WJYW-FM and WPGO-FM.

In 1986 at the age of 19, Harlow took over as the Program Director/Morning Jock at WIYQ-FM Ebensburg-Johnstown. Harlow's morning co-host was Tor Michaels with Matt Swayne middays, Brian Tercek afternoons and Dave Snyder doing nights.

In 1987, Harlow left to do nights at WVBS-FM Burgaw-Wilmington, NC using the air name of Sean McKay.

In January 1988, he joined the U.S. Army, completing Basic Training at Fort Knox, Ky., and Advanced Individual Training (Basic Broadcaster Course) at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Ind.

From September 1988-September 1990, Harlow was assigned to the American Forces Network Europe, SHAPE Belgium affiliate. There he did Mornings, Afternoons and was a reporter for AFN-TV where he covered stories at NATO.

From Sept 1990-Jan 1991, he was assigned to the U.S. Army Communications Electronics Command Public Affairs Office at Fort Monmouth, NJ.

In Jan. 1991, Harlow was deployed to Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm with the 55th Combat Pictorial Detachment, Fort Meade, Md. with assignment in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. Harlow returned to Fort Monmouth in May of 1991 and finished his first enlistment in January 1992.

From Jan-March 1992, Harlow returned to WGMR to do afternoons using the air name Shotgun Mark Curtis. In March 1992, Harlow went to WPRR-FM Altoona to do Nights. In Feb. 1993, Harlow was moved to afternoons on sister station WVAM-AM using the name Trapper Jack Elliott.

Harlow left WVAM in June 1993 and rejoined the Army in October 1993 with an assignment at the U.S. Army Aviation and Troop Command in St. Louis, Mo. Harlow served there until Feb 14, 1995 when he left for his next assignment at the Armed Forces Korea Network, Taegu affiliate.

Harlow served as the Morning Host until March 1996 when he was transferred to the headquarters in Seoul where he hosted a network-wide afternoon radio program.

Harlow left active duty military service in March 1997 with an honorable discharge.

In March 1997, Harlow was named APD/Afternoons of WYKS-FM, Gainesville, Fla. He served in that position until May 1998.

In May 1998, Harlow returned to host afternoons on WMXV-FM, Hollidaysburg-Altoona, PA. He served there until October 1998 when he became the Sports Editor of The Daily Herald, Tyrone, Pa.

Harlow served as the Sports Editor from 1998-2002 and then was promoted to the Managing Editor which he served until March, 2004.

He returned to the Army as a civilian employee as a Public Affairs Specialist at the Milwaukee Recruiting Battalion. While at Milwaukee, Harlow graduated the Public Affairs Officer Qualification Course at the Defense Information School, Fort Meade, Md.

While in Milwaukee, Harlow did nights at WKTI-FM.

In Nov, 2005, Harlow moved to the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command Public Affairs Office serving as a writer/webmaster and Command Information Chief.

While in Virginia, Harlow also worked weekends at WPTE-FM Virginia Beach and WGH-FM Newport News.

In October, 2009, Harlow accepted the position of Chief of Public Affairs of the Natick Soldier Systems Center, Natick, MA., and continues to serve in that role.
