Linux Installation
Before Installing Linux[edit]
Check the existing machine configuration, whether your machine is compatible with Linux operating system Recommended configuration is
for workstation node · Processor - Pentium-III [X86 compatible] · RAM- 128 MB · HDD- 6 GB · Mouse [2 button/3 button/ wheel mouse] · Keyboard [Standard keyboard 101 /104 keys]
for server · Processor - Pentium-IV [X86 compatible] · RAM- 256 MB [512 MB recommended] · HDD- 40 GB · Mouse [2 button/3 button/ wheel mouse] · Keyboard [Standard keyboard 101 /104 keys] software Linux distribution kits(recomended) · Red hat 8.0/9.0 –Fedora 4/5/6/7 · Suse · Mandrake · Caldera
There are three ways to installing the Linux on your system as a 1. Single Operating System 2. Dual Operating System 3. Virtual Operating System
Installing Linux Decide first which procedure we want to follow for installation of Linux Here we are using first one Linux as single operating system, Software Name : Red hat 8.0 CDs: 3CDs
Machine configuration: Processor- Pentium II/III-[X86 compatible] RAM- 256 HDD- 20 GB Mouse- 3 Button Keyboard- 104 keys Step 1 Insert the first CD of Red hat 8.0 in CD-ROM and reboot the machine [Note: If your machine is not set for booting through CD-ROM then do following setting] Step 1a – Press ‘Del’ key or ‘F2’ for setting up the CMOS [BIOS] setup Step 1b – Choose “First Boot” as “CD-ROM/DVD-ROM”
Step 2 Testing the Installation media Before Installation one Utility of Testing media automatically get starts. Test all 3 CD-ROM disks before installation When booting is started by CD-ROM. Linux OS gives you :boot prompt [See the screen short below]
Step 3 press ‘Enter’ to start booting [its searching for necessary drivers for devices like keyboard, mouse, soundcard, monitor etc –probing is taking places] Step 4 After probing is taking place it will give following screen shot
Step 5 Click on “Next “button Step 6 Choose Language as “English” Step 7 Choose Keyboard as “Us.English” Step 8 Choose mouse as “default” [Mouse type which is selected by os keep it as it is] Step 9 Click on “next” following screen short we well get
Step 10 keep default setting as it is i.e. “personal desktop” and click on next Step 11 it will take you to “Disk partition setup dialog box (shown below)
Step 12 Choose “Manually partition with Disk Druid” then click on Next Step 13 next clicks giving us “Partitioning dialog box” like as
The following options are given Option Functioning New For creating New partition Edit For editing /Modifying Existing partition Delete For deleting selected partition Reset Resetting to previous state [Before partitioning] RAID Redundant Array LVM Large Volume Manager
