Reflection and Self Assessment
[edit]According to Wikipedia's guidelines, I feel that I did pretty well on my article about Susan M. Graham for a first time writer on Wikipedia. My Sandbox says that there should be "inline citations" but when I tried to do what I was told to do according to the guidelines, the message remained the same. All of the information I used was from credible sources listed under the heading References. There already is a footnote for each citation which takes the user to that citation under References, although Wikipedia says I do not have them. I found that I had a fairly difficult time using and navigating through Wikipedia. To begin, although I created a username and went through all of the training I was told to perform prior to writing my article, Wikipedia did not give me credit for my actions nor was I listed under the course (although I was when I initially signed up for an account). As a result of not realizing this until later in the project, I had to create an entire different user name and write my article from that username. Again, I went through the training and my history and grading still indicates I have not done anything. This could definitely be my fault for not using the website in a correct manner, or it possibly could be a mix of both Wikipedia and myself. I definitely do not want to put all of the blame on a website as I know I probably screwed up here and there. My confusion is that when I checked I was always on our Virology BI-302 page and my second or new username was listed when I went through the training for a second time. In terms of the article, I feel I put a decent amount of primary information on her, but I do think I could have extended her contributions with more information from her primary articles. I was unsure how long each section was supposed to be although I made sure to ask fellow students. The students I spoke with said they had about the same amount of information, but it still does not seem like enough to me. Finally, as far as guidelines, I adhered to all of my instructors emails and Wikipedia's instructions. This is aside from the inline citation comment. I did put one inline citation for the article listed under references as 1, but when I tried for other articles that were listed 2, 3, 4, or 5 the citation did not show under the section. I suppose this confuses me since there is a footnote for each section or sentence when needed. The footnote has a number which corresponds with the reference; this is the reason I am confused about the note I am seeing. Thanks to the help of my instructor and fellow students, I was able to at least come up with a page in my sandbox. If everything is okay, I would like to take it live, but due to the message I do not know if I can, or how to make the page better (since when I click on the links, I have done what the website says I should be doing). Once again, overall I believe I met the guidelines on Susan Graham, aside from the one comment about references from Wikipedia (although there are footnotes where appropriate). This article has definitely helped me to better understand technology, although I will be the first to admit again that many issues could have been user fault by not doing something as I thought I should have. I am definitely confused about a few issues having to do with Wikipedia in relation to this project. I hope my article is a good start to a good page for Wikipedia regardless of bumps along the road!
