Act of Passion, section 4

[edit]

Rezeption

Reception

The English translation Act of Passion became one of Simenon's best-selling books in his American adopted home. By the year 1958 it had sold 350,000 copies. The Saturday Review stated, "Perhaps inevitably, Simenon has decided to abandon the static form of the detective story and to write novels about the eternal conflict of good and evil." Similarly, Kirku's reviews in the novel found more of a psychological investigation into the motives for murder than the criminal investigations of earlier years, whereby Lettre à mon juge in the tradition of Simenon's successes La Neige était sale and Le Temps d'Anaïs stand. In the New York Times Anthony Boucher saw Simenon hang "more verbose, pretentious and a good deal less effective" than in his early works. There would hardly be a Maigret story that would not be considered superior to the novel, whether as entertainment or serious literature.
