From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I, User:hcmaruyama, am an assistant professor in history and Asian and Asian American Studies at the University of Connecticut. I received my PhD in American Studies from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities in 2021. My research is on Japanese American incarceration during World War II and how it was built on and contributed to Native American dispossession. I formerly worked for the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center of the Smithsonian Institution and the Heart Mountain Interpretive Center. I am a yonsei (fourth generation Japanese American) on my father's side descended from the Heart Mountain, Jerome, and Gila River concentration camps and am descended from white settlers on my mother's side. I will not make any edits that would not be beneficial to the goals of Wikipedia. My main edits consist of the following:

–Japanese American history and culture

–Japanese American biographies

–Asian American history and culture

–Asian American biographies

–Native American history and culture

I also use Wikipedia for class projects to teach undergraduate students about the politics of knowledge production and to see themselves as producers of knowledge around marginalized histories. In spring 2022, my class on Japanese Americans in WW2 will be adding pages and improving pages on:

  • Takuichi Fujii, an Issei artist who created paintings of his experience at Minidoka and Puyallup
  • Fred Tayama, a JACL member at Manzanar who was beaten up and accused Harry Ueno among others leading to Ueno's arrest.
  • Japanese American Draft Resistance
  • Stanley Hayami, a Heart Mountain incarceree who was killed in WW2; his diaries have been the subject of a documentary and exhibits at the Japanese American National Museum
  • Kikuno Tashiro, a Japanese American doctor who founded the Japanese Hospital of LA

I will modify my editing behavior based on problems cited by other editors or if my editing conflicts with other Wikipedia guidelines. I ask that other editors do not hesitate to contact me, via my user talk page, if I appear to be going against this declaration. Hcmaruyama (talk) 15:52, 19 March 2016 (UTC)
