Working with Wikipedia Edit

[edit]

Editing Wikipedia Pages: The edit function on Wikipedia, has a broad selection of options. It has a hierarchal structure for organizing thoughts, a built in interface for connecting content from the internet. This allows authors to incorporate links to other Wikipedia pages using links. It also has built in feature for citing references.

Headings

[edit]

Heading, represents the sections of the article. Subheadings, represent categories or subsections of an article. The more logical the choice of headings more comprehendible the article will be. Headings are used to organize and present a broad range of information

Paragraph: This helps you set the style of the text. For example, a header, or plain paragraph text. You can also use it to offset block quotes.

[edit]

Links are a means of referencing other articles and sites on the world wide web.

Links: The chain button allows you to link your text. Highlight the word, and push the button. VisualEditor will automatically suggest related Wikipedia articles for that word or phrase. This is a great way to connect your article to more Wikipedia content. You only have to link important words once, usually during the first time they appear. If you want to link to pages outside of Wikipedia (for an "external links" section, for example) click on the "External link" tab

Typography

[edit]

There are general rules for when to modify text or not. There are two general modifications bolding and italicizing type face. Bold type faces are usually used to draw attention to a particular world or phrase. Italic type faces are usually used to represent titles of books and articles.

A: Highlight your text, then click here to format it with bold, italics, etc. The "More" options allows you to underline, add code snippets, and change language keyboards.

Citations

[edit]

Every well rounded wiki article has supporting evidence to back up the presented facts. It is important to back up an article with validated sources. When a statement is written relating to some topic reference is usually given.

Cite: The citation tool in VisualEditor helps format your citations. You can simply paste a DOI or URL, and the VisualEditor will try to sort out all of the fields you need. Be sure to review it, however, and apply missing fields manually (if you know them). You can also add books, journals, news, and websites manually. That opens up a quick guide for inputting your citations. Finally, you can click the "re-use" tab if you've already added a source and just want to cite it again.

Validated Sources

[edit]

Validated sources include, published materials, like books, previewed journal articles, and international newspaper clippings. However things like blog posts and the like are not generally considered credible. With newspaper article watch out for opinion pieces, because they are just like blog posts, and do not substantiate facts.

Lists

[edit]

There are many formatting options for displaying lists of information. Bullets, numbered items, Roman Numerals and special characters can be added to help explain a concept.

Bullets: To add bullet points or a numbered list, click here.

Incorporating Media

[edit]

In addition to adding text and citations and author can complement an article with graphics, images, animations, and so on. Media can be used to round out an article by illustrating and example or generalizing a concept.

Insert: This tab lets you add media, images, or tables.

Special Characters

[edit]

Ω: The final tab allows you to add special characters, such as those found in non-English words, scientific notation, and a handful of language extensions.
